Tips and techniques to add submit your site to search engine and directory

When your site is complete, and ready for search engine submission, to which directory and search engine do you submit add it to? Find below a list of the most used search engine with useful information (submit / Add page, indexation process, search engine stats and more). For search engine optimization I recommend hand-submission rather than automatic-submission to major search engine.

AltaVista (link to submission page)
- When you access the Add URL page, it will display a submission code that must be entered. The code is a series of letters and numbers, but because they are displayed in a graphic format, automatic submission tools cannot read the information. As a result, AltaVista says the new system has stopped submission robots in their tracks. Coinciding with the new submission code, AltaVista has also removed the five pages per day, per web site limit it used to observe.

- This trigger will indicate to the search engine that only pages indexed within the catalog that lie on yourdomain.com should be returned. Altavista will return to you a complete list of all pages that lie on yourdomain.com that exist within the Altavista catalog.

2 - Want to search for web pages that are linking to your site?
- Find out how many sites and which sites presently link to yours. The more web sites that link to you, the better your site will rank. Now you can quantify exactly how many link to you and from where.

3 - Want to identify your competitors?
- This trigger will indicate to the search engine that only pages indexed within the catalog that are similiar or "like" the page indexed on yourdomain.com should be returned. Altavista will return to you a complete list of all pages that exist within the Altavista catalog which are similar to the content featured on your site. This list may be quite long but generally, the top 20-50 results are your most prominent competition.

AOL Search
- The main listings for categories and web sites come from the Open Directory and Inktomi. To add your site to AOL you should submit it to the Open Directory and Inktomi

Direct Hit (link to submission page)
- The Direct Hit rankings are based on actual search activity of millions of Internet users. New sites submitted or found when spider crawls the web are listed in the search engine and given an opportunity to be found by searchers. Sites that users visit and spend time at for particular search topics are then ranked higher than other sites. (click here for more info on Direct hit ranking).
- Directhit results appear on Hotbot, Lycos, MSN, Zdnet, Infoseek and more (click here). This is the main reason why you should submit your url to Direct Hit.

- The main results at Excite come from its own crawler. However the "Directory Search" results come from LookSmart.
- Excite results also appear on WebCrawler and Magellan.

- Auto submitters don't work too well for excite because they ask for language, location, and category. I recommend hand-submission. You can submit 3-5 pages per day but it takes several month to be indexed

- It is not related to GoTo.

- Submit 1 page per day and only your main url. It takes several weeks to appear in the index
GoTo (link to submission page)
- GoTo sells its main listings. Companies can pay money to be placed higher in the search results. Non-paid results come from Inktomi. GoTo is not related to Go (Infoseek).

Google (link to submission page)
- Google's spider usually visits your site 2 times per month. During the mid, and at the end of a month. Submit the home page, then the spider will follow out. Re-submitting frequently is considered spam and they may remove your site from the index. Once google has you indexed you should be there for quite a long time, any pages you add, should get indexed on the bots next visit. NEVER resubmit even when do updates.
- Yahoo and Netscape Search use Google results.

- HotBot results comes from the Open Directory project and the Inktomi search engine. Lycos has bought Hotbot but continues to run it separately.
- You can submit up to 5 URLS per day per domain. When you are listed, check on your entry every few days, Inktomi has a habit of dropping pages regularly and often - so you will need to resubmit as soon as they disappear.

Inktomi
- Search/Web technology is used by many of the world's leading online services: Hotbot, Msn, Anzwer, Canada, Iwon, GoTo... (Click here to view the list). Inktomi is a great database, thus is not accessible through a submission form.
- To get into the Inktomi DB, you may submit your website to HotBot , Canada and Anzwer .Submitting to several different Inktomi powered search engines is not considered as spam. You can submit up to 5 URLS per day per domain.
- When you are listed, check on your entry every few days, Inktomi has a habit of dropping pages regularly and often - so you will need to resubmit as soon as they disappear. To check your ranking on Inktomi search your site on Hotbot with Agentwebranking

- Submit up to 50 pages per day. It takes 3 to 6 weeks to be listed.
